Originally a drummer and percussionist, Matt began studying piano at age 18 after meeting jazz studies professor and pianist Darrell Grant while auditioning for the music department at Portland State University. That serendipitous meeting ignited the inspiration for Matt to pursue a new path, becoming a Jazz Piano performance major with Grant as his private instructor. During that time Matt also studied with Charley Gray and Randy Porter, gaining knowledge and experience in the fields of composition and arranging. Since graduating in 2008 Matt has begun to make a name for himself in the Portland jazz scene, leading his own trio and playing solo, as well as playing as a sideman with a host of local acts including Marilyn Keller, Shelly Rudolph, Chance Hayden and Bre Gregg.
In 2012 Matt had the opportunity to work as arranger for Recognition, an original musical by his father. Recognition went on to win a Portland Area Musical Theater Award for Outstanding Ensemble, as well as nomination for Outstanding Female Actor, Outstanding Orchestrations, Outstanding Original Song, Outstanding Original Score and Outstanding Original show.
From 2014 to 2016 Matt served as Musical Director for the Tony Starlight Showroom, playing variety of a comedy filled shows covering music of the 30s up to present day. During this time Matt also collaborated with Kevin Jones from the Red Door Project ,again the role of Musical Director, working on August Wilson's The Piano Lesson and We Are Proud to Present... by Jackie Sibblies Drury.
These days Matt splits his time between teaching, composing performing and hiking.
